Portal

Material

Felted wool

This object was made and used as a performative tool during our residency ‘I carry you in my eyes with Kestle Barton in 2018. This residency was about forming a relationship through object, sound and storytelling, with a group of Syrian families who have recently arrived to Cornwall. This object was our start-point to create a portal to a ‘shared and imaginary world’ between us all. The portal travelled with us through many dimensions of the work – from an initial washing ceremony in the local creek – to the sharing of traditional songs an food, to a collective blessing ceremony where it was worn as a cloak,  to being the centre piece of a feast and traditional dance exchange, before its final return to the waters.
